Patatas Artesanas Al estilo tradicional - Snack Day

Snack Day's Patatas Artesanas were tested while travelling in a high speed AVE train between Barcelona and Madrid. Our palate cannot distinguish some flavours when we are flying on a plane. Since our train was figuratively "flying" through tunnels, hitting speeds of 300km/h, our ears were feeling pressure differences. Are our palates and smell altered by the pressure changes, low humidity and surrounding noise? See here.

We felt these chips can play in the top league: We perceived a very good flavour with sweet scents and a real taste to hand made potato chips as the label indicates ("Artesanas al estilo tradicional"). Without jacket, these chips are cut flat, fried in 100% olive oil and modestly seasoned with salt. A balanced combination.

Rillies - Bravo

 

Rillies chips could be considered the ruffled sister of our last Bravo review. Apart from the Rillies' wavy cut, these are thicker and tastier. 

Middle sized potatoes have their skin removed, cut undulated and baked in sunflower oil. This results in chips that are much savoury and juicier compared to its reviewed "light" predecessor.

A pity with the Rillies undulated chips share with its sister: the huge amount of salt used doesn't allow us appreciate its true potato flavour.

Kartoffel Chips Salz - Bravo

Bravo chips took our attention from the supermarket shelf: a matt bag with "SALT" glossy letters simulating lightbulbs, the packaging additionally reading "30% less fat". 

These chips allegedly contain less fat than regular potato chips (sunflower oil is 22% of total weight). Such low fat may feature at the expense of a faded potato taste. For us the chips felt dry, less juicy than other chips. On top of that the chips felt very salty (we calculated a 2% salt in weight).

Salted chips - Hema

Crisps&Critics is back with a review from the Netherlands... a review that would fall within the "cheap chips" category. The Hema Salted chips bag just cost 0.50 EUR but its taste is way above any expectation. 

Without completely removing all the skin, the sliced potatoes are baked in 100% sunflower oil, resulting in a pale yellow bubbly surface. Many chips have an elongated shape. And all of them crunch and taste really natural.

Chips gesalzen - Spar

Austrian potato chips in quite big quantites and price friendlier than other chips of similar quality to be found also on this blog (see for example here). 

The potato chips in this bag are of a medium size, peeled, with a thin and flat cut. We find very few bent-over potatoes. Sunflower oil is used for cooking these lightweight, almost transparent, bright yellow colour crisps.

If we could change something to these chips, we would spice them with a bit less salt to better enjoy the crunch and taste of this Austrian potato snack.
